HighFive!

June 4, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’m back, and barely alive. Thought I’d celebrate with the first HighFive!, in what hopes to be a weekly feature on things I like. Ideally this would be posted on the weekend, but I have been busy the past few days trying to find my brain.

5. BEARD PAPA SWEETS

Oh. my. fucking. god. How have I not tasted these delicious treaties sooner? Probably because I never go to Chatswood. You may have seen (or smelt…) the hideous Puffy Cookie Puff knockoff, but they do not compare to Beard Papa. Imagine a light pastry puff oozing with cool delicious custardy cream,  dustclouds of icing sugar floating up into your nostrils and causing you to choke and sneeze on delicious sweetness in one flavourfilled olfactory orgy.  Oh Beard Papa, marry me.

4. MEET ME AT MIKES

I managed to squeeze in an hour of shopping before I left Melbourne, and visited Meet Me At Mikes on Brunswick St in Fitzroy. They have the cutest shop bags ever, made from newspaper, scrap material and old children’s books. Did I mention that I love deer?

Shop owner Pip also runs a blog, and is currently writing a book on Australian crafters, due out March next year. Get on it!

3. DJECO CUBES

I was at Five Senses earlier today when I saw these toy animal blocks where you could change the heads and the bodies around. I immediately picked them up and clutched them madly at my chest and thought, “I AM NOT LETTING THESE GO NO NOT EVER NOT EVERRRR!”

I scare myself sometimes.

I love the illustration by Marc Boutavant though, reminds me of 50s kid food packaging. The animals are great, they all play in a big band together. There’s the three little pigs, the disco poodle and even a freaking lemur. My favourite is the MC tiger. “Straight outta Compton, crazy tigerfucker named Toy Cube!”

I just realised the tiger has the wrong pants on. Grey tail and cymbal stand don’t really make sense for this rappin’ kitty.

2. LEVITY NIGHTS POSTER

Levity Nights is a new indie night at the Hotel Hollywood in Surry Hills, and has a rocking poster by the good folks at Aria award-winning design studio Debaser. It’s retro and art deco and completely new at the same time. Love it! Would look fantastic as a print. Hint. Hint.

1. POTTY MOUTH HOMEWARES

I love this. Nothing says modern young lady then “Trollop” on bone china. TrixieDelicious revamps vintage crockery with phrases that would make any grandmother blush.

Subversive cross stitch has been around since 2003, and is the brainchild of Julie Jackson. The website is great- you can buy kits from $12 to $20 US dollars, with cheap postage to Australia. You can even choose to order the chunky gold frames used in the photos, or design your own phrases. Hell, I’m tempted to start designing my own.
