Young Blood and designbloom mart

The Powerhouse Museum’s Young Blood Designers market and designbloom mart are teaming up for Sydney Design 08 to host over 70 local and International designers. The market will be running over four days from 14 – 17 August, 2008 and are currently accepting applications. Entries close 21 July, 2008.

To enter, download and sumbit an application form and send it in with supporting material. Stall cost is $380.

NewQuay Designer Market

NewQuay at Docklands in Melbourne is having its first Designers market on 7 September, as part of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. It will then become a monthly event, running on the first Sunday of every month until April 09.

The stalls will be selling a mix of clothing, accessories, crafts and arts. They are currently accepting applications from Victorian based designers selling handmade items. To apply, download the Expression of Interest form and return it by July 11, 2008.

Zine Scene

Since Aussie Arts was recieving alot of search hits for zines, I thought I’d celebrate the MCA Zine Fair with an entry about the Zine Scene in Australia. If you are unaware of what exactly a zine entails, I suggest you get the full lowdown at Book of Zines.

The Australian zine scene (sorry, I can’t stop saying it) is a funny thing. It’s like Sydney weather – dry one day, flooding rain the next. The entire structure of the scene is run on people’s spare time and money, meaning that previous information about zine stockists, distros and groups quickly becomes outdated. I’m hoping to maintain this entry as a current and relevant list of zine contacts, which I’ll update as information comes to hand. If you are aware of anything that’s incorrect or missing, please send it through to karen.at.karenisafox.com and I’ll make the necessary changes.

The National Young Writers’ Festival is held as part of the This Is Not Art (TINA) Festival, during the September/October long weekend of every year. Melbourne International Design Festival

The National Design Centre’s Melbourne International Design Festival is coming! And so far the lineup looks pretty damn good. And the best bit is that you can be a part of it.

The Melbourne Design Market will be held on Sunday 20 July at Federation Square carpark, and they’re currently accepting stallholder applications. There’s only 50 places, and last year’s stallholders included the likes of Alpha60 and Third Drawer Down. And they’re pretty selective too, looking for only the highest quality commercial products.

However, applying is worth it. The day sees more than 100,000 visitors, and you’ll be next to the best of Melbourne’s fashion, homeware and design retailers. Online applications close 5pm, 4 June 2008.

The Festival organisers are also on the lookout for submissions from designers for the 4th Australian Poster Annual. Open to designers everywhere, the brief this year is “Strength in numbers”, which must be interpreted in your poster artwork. You can find out more about what this means with their Festival Manifesto.

The 50 selected entries will be exhibited at BMW Edge during the Festival in July. A People’s Choice Award will also be offered, and limited edition, signed prints of each poster can be purchased.

To enter, you’ll need to register your interest online, then submit a jpeg of your poster with completed entry form and $60 entry payment. Submissions are due 5pm, 19 June 2008.

The organisers also think it is very important that you read the Submission Guidelines and Conditions of Entry before you start anything. Because they mention it quite a few times on their site I suggest you do too.

MCA zine fair

There seems to be a reawakening in the Sydney zine scene recently, which can only be a good thing. And a great place to checkout any new publications is at the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Zine Fair, on Sunday 25th May.

It’ll be held in the foundation hall of the gallery from 11am to 6pm, and will feature a number of events during the day, including The Creative Dissent discussion as part of the Sydney Writers’ Festival (with Ozi Batla and Charles Firth!), and performance by band Circle.

Stall space is now all booked out, but entry to the event is free free freeee!
